Bring on the Manis & Pedis

with our colourful Spring picks

Until recently we never thought about the implications of applying nail varnish to our finger and toe nails. In fact, at Fable & Matter, we’re huge suckers for having colourful hands and pretty feet and even love the self-care ritual of taking the time out to file, buff and polish.

But not too long ago, we finally realised that the strong chemical smell associated with manicures was trying to tell us something – that a strong chemical smell = STRONG CHEMICALS, GUYS. Applying literal paint to our body parts isn’t all that great for us when the likelihood is that those toxic substances are coming into your body via your porous nails and lungs and on top of that, many of those chemicals would have been tested on animals before they arrived with you.

While the bad news is that there is currently no way to produce nail varnish completely without synthetic and harmful substances, the good news is there are more and more brands finding ways to eliminate the worst poisonous substances such as formaldehyde, parabens and camphor (which are linked with allergies, hormonal balance, nausea and many of which are known to be carcinogenic) and even more who are pledging to be vegan friendly.

Below, we’ve picked 5 brands that are nailing beautiful and long-lasting colours whilst staying well away from the nasty stuff. Enjoy!
